Executive Director

North Maine Woods, Inc., a Non-Profit Corporation, is currently seeking a motivated, reliable, and highly qualified individual to serve as our Executive Director at our Ashland, Maine headquarters. NMW oversees & manages the recreational use of approximately 4 million acres in northern and northwestern Maine on behalf of various private and public landowners. The primary goal of NMW is to provide safe, well-managed public access (both day-use and overnight camping) in the remote region.

Position Overview

The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs, and strategic direction of North Maine Woods. The ideal candidate for this role has a hands-on background managing a large staff and has a passion for outdoor recreation. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and ensures that the Board’s goals are met efficiently and effectively.

The Executive Director’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Business and Financial Management of the Organization
  • Budgeting and Financial Reporting
  • Leadership of Day-to-Day Operations
  • Oversight of Management Staff
  • Recreational Management within Private Woodland Areas:
  • Public Relations & Community Outreach

Preference will be given to candidates that demonstrate a strong passion for outdoor recreation, have experience leading a large staff, can be a strong advocate for landowners & sporting guides, and show an aptitude for verbal and written communication, presentation, and relationship development.

Automated Checkpoint Receptionist

We have ONE opening for an Automated Checkpoint Receptionists at our Main Office in Ashland.

We are looking to cover a Midnight to 8AM shift on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

This is a seasonal NIGHT position which runs from May until mid-November.

  1. Manages traffic at automated checkpoints using computer software and images on monitors in main office.
  2. Assists public by providing information and directions by phone.
  3. Assists recreational users with self-registration process and payment of fees.
  4. Assists recreational users with self-registration process and payment of fees for Penobscot River Corridor (PRC).
  5. Maintains record of automated checkpoint traffic and communicates with checkpoint staff.
  6. Assists Office Receptionist in organizing and filing Land Use Permits.
  7. Performs additional duties as assigned.  (North Maine Woods has contracts with state agencies, which requires registration, collection and record keeping at certain checkpoints, as an example.)
