LAND USE AND CAMPING FEES 2010

As many visitors know, NMW has strived to keep user fees at a reasonable level for 35 years. Recent increases in propane and gasoline, plus the 25% increase in Maine’s minimum wage over the last few years has had a significant impact on operating costs. Coupled with the 10 year trend of fewer visitors coming to northern Maine, we were faced with either dramatically reducing checkpoint and campsite services or increasing some user fee categories.

As a long term resolution to address future expenses, NMW has made advancements to reduce energy costs by converting from propane generated power to solar power at many locations and has plans to replace some manned checkpoints with electronic gates.

Passage through checkpoints before or after the hours listed in Checkpoints and Hours of Operation requires payment of an additional $20.00 per vehicle. Late passage is not allowed at Canadian border checkpoints. The hours listed are the only times passage is permitted through Canadian-US border checkpoints.

While Canadian funds are accepted and an attempt to provide a fair exchange is made, we suggest that Canadian funds be exchanged for U.S. currency before arrival at the checkpoints.
